Not to spoil a delightful series at StaleGum recalling the Fleer releases of old on news that Upper Deck is no longer releasing a Fleer baseball product, but I believe the end of Fleer came in 2005.
Sure the name lived on, but it was still Upper Deck designing and releasing the product, not the company that struggled against Topps for so long before finally opening the gates for companies like Upper Deck when they became a licensee back in 1981.
So in essence, Fleer brought about it’s own demise.
Still enjoy the retrospectacle over at StaleGum. Here’s one of my favorites, the 1994 Fleer release. Nice looking cards, although too many inserts for the set builder in me.
