Where have all the Young Guns gone? Pt 2

4 05 2008

See the first post for background.   Format remains card number, player, team played for in 07/08, and number of cards in the regular Upper Deck release after their Young Gun card.  Reasoning being if they truly are Young Guns, they should merit further releases.

All info from the Internet Hockey Database.  On to 2000/01 Upper Deck series 2.

411 Rick DiPietro – Another 60+ game season for the New York Islanders with a 2.82 GAA and a .902 sv%.  An Upper Deck card every year but 02/03.
412 Michel Riesen – Played for Davos (Swiss).  Was the 14th overall pick in the 1997 draft, so perhaps justifiable.  No cards since.
413 Reto Von Arx – A teammate of Riesen for Davos (Swiss), where he averages about a point a game.  No Upper Deck cards.
414 Martin Havlat – 35 games for the Chicago Blackhawks.  A solid player.  A card every year.
415 Matt Elich – Heilbronn Falcons.  No other cards.
416 Jonas Ronnqvist – Out of Hockey.  No other cards.
417 Jason Labarbera – 45 games for the Los Angeles Kings, a 3.00 GAA and a .910 sv%.  Saw a card in the 05/06 release.
418 Marc Moro – Out of hockey.  77 PIMs in 30 NHL games.  No Upper Deck release since.
419 Mark Smith – 54 games for the Calgary Flames, 59 PIMS.  Surprise to me, he’s been in the NHL every years sans lockout.  No cards, though.
420 Petr Hubacek – 40 games for Vitkovice HC (Czech), 89 PIMS.  6 NHL games, no futher Upper Deck releases.
421 Niclas Wallin – 66 games for the Carolina Hurricanes, 54 PIMS.  Cards in 2002/03 and 05/06.
422 Brian Swanson – Played for the Sinupret Ice Tigers.  No other cards.
423 Petteri NummelinPlayed for the Minnesota Wild last year.  No cards.
424 Alexandre Boikov36 games for Ufa Salavat Yulayev (Russia), 63 PIMS.  No other cards.
425 Ossi Vaananen – Djurgardens IF Stockholm (Sweeden), 45 games, 102 PIMS (I’m noticing a theme).  430 career NHL games, no Upper Deck cards since.
426 Roman Simicek Vitkovice HC (Czech).  Actually featured on a 01/02 Upper Deck cards after his 57 game, 15 point 51 PIM campaign for the Wild and Penguins in 00/01.
427 Greg Classen – Played for the Manitoba Moose (AHL).  No Upper Deck cards.
428 Marty Turco – Leading the Dallas Stars in their quest for the Stanley Cup.  A legitimate Young Gun, even though he’s a goalie.  Cards since 02/03.
429 Shane Hindy – 43 games for the Boston Bruins,  5 Points, 41 PIMs. Despite 412 NHL games, no Upper Deck release since.
430 Lubomir Visnovsky –  Scoring defenseman for the LA Kings.  Another qualified Young Gun.  01/02 release, then from 05/06 on.
431 Bryce Salvador  64 games split between the St Louis Blues and the New Jersey Devils, scored 11 Points, 54 PIMs.  Been in the league since without a new Upper Deck card.
432 Lubomir Sekeras –  Trinec Ocelari HC (Czech).  Put up solid numbers through the 03/04 season, then ended up overseas.  Was on a 01/02 Upper Deck card.
433 David Aebischer –  1 game with the Phoenix Coyotes, 26 games with Lugano (Swiss).  A number of strong years with the Colorado Avalanche.  His run of Upper Deck cards ended this year.
434 Peter Ratchuk –  DEG Metro Stars (German), 54 games, 111 PIMS.  He was also a 1st round pick, taken 25th by the Colorado Avalanche.  No cards since.
435 Roman Cechmanek –  Trinec Ocelari HC (Czech).  A number of great seasons for the Philadelphia Flyers, only to let them down every year in the playoffs.  Went to Europe after the lockout and never came back.  Featured on cards through 04/05.
436 Eric Belanger –  Solid 3rd line center, last year for the Minnesota Wild.  Upper Deck cards through 03/04.
437 Alexander Kharitonov – Moscow Dynamo (Russia) No cards since.
438 Jeff Bateman 36 points in 28 games for St. Thomas University.  Good to see he’s headed back to school.  No NHL games played, no Upper Deck releases.
439 Damian Surma – Asiago HC (Italy).  Played 2 games in the NHL over 2 seasons.  No other cards.
440 Jordan Krestanovich – 70 games, 65 points for the Victoria Salmon Kings (ECHL).  Also a Young Gun in the 2002/03 release.  No release since.

That’s 30 more players, 80 total.  Here’s the tally so far:

  • 12 more players still in the NHL, for a total of 26
  • 2 that are out of hockey, total of 11
  • 18 with no other releases, total of 47
  • And being generous, 10 players that I would rate as “Young Guns”

More to come.
