500 and 1

1 06 2008

Manny Ramirez walked into the 500 HR club tonight, hitting his tenth of the season off Chad Bradford with 2 outs in the 7th. For whatever reason, I was a little turned off as Manny threw down the bat and began to stroll down the first base line as if he’d just seen ball four instead. I know it’s “Manny being Manny,” but there’s something to be said for showing respect for the game and the pitcher you just hit a milestone off of. And it sure didn’t feel like it there.

Meanwhile, In Cincinnati, the next big thing hit his first career walk off home run to lead the Reds over the Braves in 10 innings.  As the ball left the bat, the only walking being done was by the Braves as they left the field.  Go watch the replay and see Brian McCann get up almost immediately and head off the field as Jay Bruce trots down the line.

Now Manny’s been here for years, and Jay Bruce a matter of days.  Of course they’ll have different attitudes  towards the game.  But as a fan of the Reds and of guys who play the game like they love it, I can only hope that the phrase “Jay being Jay” never has to be uttered.

Still, congrats to them both, especially since Manny has hit 500 more than I have.  But if I hurry, I could still catch Jay.  For now.
