Ampersands rule.
Disclaimer: Base cards may be depicted as Gold or Black bordered parallels. I just needed the image.
Pack 5
UH212 Guillermo Mota
According to the back, Mota was acquired by the Brewers because he held the record for most innings pitched without giving up a run at Miller Park (17 and 1/3). How long as a Brewer before he gave up his first run at Miller Park? 1/3 of an inning.
UH49 Ryan Ludwick
UH218 Salomon Torres
UH142 Adrian Gonzalez and Matt Holiday Classic Combos
Ah, yes, the classic combo of Adrian Gonzalez and Matt Holiday, or Gonziday, as I like to call them. Year from now as we recall the All Star game of 2008, and we will talk of Gonziday as our fathers speak of Ruth and Gehrig or Spahn and Sein.
UH143 Chipper Jones Highlight (400th HR)
UH304 Brad Lidge All Star
UH35 Hanley Ramirez All Star
UH311 Oscar Salazar
UH52 Derek Jeter All Star
MMS68 Mickey Mantle Story
David Wright filler card
Another questionable choice of pictures. Maybe I could start a side blog, Cards Without a Face. I would use this one in the masthead.
Pack 6
UH278 So Taguchi – Fun fact from the back? The only player in MLB history to wear #99.
UH146 Carlos Gonzalez
CarGo now CarGone to the Rockies.
UH70 George Sherrill
UH131 Manny Ramirez Highlight (500th HR)
UH229 Adrain Gonzalez All Star
UH233 Grady Sizemore All Star
As much as I complain about poor photo choices, there are a number of nice looking cards in the set, including Grady’s follow through.
UH124 Alex Rodriguez and Evan Longoria Classic Combos
UH99 Hanley Ramirez and David Ortiz Classic Combos
I have no idea what’s going on in this picture. Apparently, Hanley thinks he’s an airplane and I think Ortiz just doesn’t want to be landed on.
UH300 CC Sabathia Black parallel 26/57 with damaged corner.
UH288 Evan Longoria gold foil
Toppstown
The Sabathia black parallel (26 is half his jersey – A TRUE ONE OF ONE!) was mispacked and sticking up out of the rest of the cards, which exposed it to it’s foe. It also appears to have been cut from it’s sheet with dull hedge clippers. This is the first time I’ve ever gotten a damaged numbered card from Topps. Upper Deck hand numbered a replacement the last time I sent them one, but that was years ago. Anyone know what Topps’ policy on replacing numbered cards?
The box so far:
Base: 51 out of 330 – 15%
Black Border parallel: 1 – UH300 CC Sabathia 26/57, damaged
Gold Border parallel: 1 -UH78 Dallas Braden 1415/2008
Gold Foil Parallel: 3
Mickey Mantle Story MMS68
Mets Ring of Honor: 1 – MRH-GC Gary Carter
Year in Review: 1 – YR161 Marlon Byrd
Toppstown: 3, including one gold
What? Taguchi isn’t even the first Phillie to wear #99! Mitch Williams wore it. And so did Turk Wendell. Topps needs a fact checker.
