2008/09 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1 Hobby Box break, packs 13-16

9 01 2009

Halfway home… of the first box. I’ve decided not to do a pack by pack breakdown of the second box (unless there is outcry and calls for my head if I don’t), since there’s so much still to break and so little time between the new baseball releases.  Seriously, can you believe there’s less than a month before 2009 hits the shelves?

Anyhow, for this box, we’ll go marching on and see where it goes from there.

Pack 13

59 Kimmo Timonen
16 Vesa Toskala
92 Francis Bouillon
51 Zbynek Michalek
202 Blake Wheeler Young Gun
225 Matt D’Agostini Young Gun (?)

123 Mathieu Garon
133 Mike Modano
174 Maxim Afinogenov
158 Cam Barker

What the heck?  There’s 10 cards in this 8 card pack, and two Young Guns.  So if you got a box with a 6 card pack and were short a Young Gun, I’m sorry.  Both Wheeler and D’Agostini have some potential, and it appears I’m knocking out a lot of the  second and third tier Young Guns with this box.  I imagine I could be doing a whole lot worse.

Pack 14

72 Brandon Dubinsky

7 Mattias Ohlund
199 Martin Brodeur checklist
4 Victor Kozlov
137 Trevor Daley
191 Todd White
182 Zdeno Chara
149 Marek Svatos

Ah, Duber. Look at him, with his head up and eyes evaluating the play as he nears the blueline.  Gotta love that, especially from a rookie.  He clicked with Jagr last year in a way the Gomez and Drury could not.  This year he has been centering Nikolai Zherdev to a career best year.  Not bad for a second year player at all.

Pack 15

11 Daniel Sedin
62 Daniel Alfredsson
97 Mike Komisarek

215 Tom Sestito Young Gun
120 Shawn Horcoff
130 Jiri Hudler
156 Patrick Sharp
147 Paul Stastny

Sestito is a fighter and a waste of a Young Gun, so instead I’ll ask this: Mike Komesarik’s an All Star? Really? And not just an All Star, but a starter? Markov I get, Kovalev, I guess, you can make a case for, but Komesarik? He ranks sixth in points for defenseman on his own team, for crying out loud. Sure he blocks shots and hits with the best of them, but that’s not what people look for in an All Star game. Instead, a guy like Dennis Wideman (27 points, +24) has to stay home and watch the game on TV. What a waste.

Pack 16

65 Antoine Vermette
38 Jonathan Cheechoo
25 Mike Smith

73 Scott Gomez
155 Jonathan Toews
128 Nicklas Lidstrom
159 Martin Havlat
110 Dustin Brown

Sorry, Gomer, I know I should post the Rangers, but that’s a beauty of a save there by Smith. Or maybe the puck is under that Upper Deck logo, in which case it’s a heck of a try. Either way, it’s a heck of a card.

The box so far:

Base: 116 out of 200 (58%)
Young Guns (1:6): 7 out of 50 (14%) – Bogosian, Sbisa, Fistric, Doughty, Wheeler, D’Agostini, Sestito
Game Used: 1 – Chris Chelios
Captains Calling (1:24): 1 – Brendan Morrow
Hat Trick Heroes (1:12): 2 – Joe Sakic, Dany Heatley
Hockey Heroes (1:12): 2 – Sidney Crosby x2
Winter Classic Highlights: 2 – Campbell, Armstrong

Re: Komisarek: It’s Montreal’s 100th anniversary and the fans recognized that by voting for Canadiens. We were on a pace to get all six starters until the Penguins got all pissy about it.
