2008/09 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1 Hobby Box break, packs 17-20

10 01 2009

The pentultimate post on ths box, and still only the one jersey.  Is it pennance for by double Young Gun 10 card pack?  Or is the big ole jackpot still on the way?  Let’s see what answers these next four bring:

Pack 17

78 Trent Hunter
74 Henrik Lundqvist

35 Joe Thornton
76 Rick DiPietro
108 Jack Johnson
189 Ilya Kovalchuk
185 Mark Stuart
196 Bobby Ryan

“King Henrik” is the Rangers MVP from the last two seasons, and if he can get out of the mini slump he’s been in lately, he’ll probably win it again this season. The Rangers will ride him until he falls apart, and he’s started in all but eight games this season. You hate to see a goalie get over used, though, and Valiquette looked pretty good against the Sabres tonight. Hopefully that means a better rested Lundqvist for the playoffs.

Pack 18

40 Torrey Mitchell
47 Sergei Gonchar
56 Simon Gagne
94 Guillaume Latendresse
168 Daymond Langkow
135 Brenden Morrow

154 Wojtek Wolski
187 Kari Lehtonen

No, the whole set’s not horizontal, but they do make for the nicest cards. That’s Morrow about to tell his famous “Three Drunken Nuns” joke. This year, he’s torn his ACL and will not return. I think the Stars have video of this joke on tape though, which they watch as they travel for inspiration.

Pack 19

77 Blake Comeau
85 Paul Martin
58 Martin Biron
96 Tomas Plekanec
184 Milan Lucic
136 Brad Richards
179 Drew Stafford
SS1 Patrick Kane Sophomore Sensations

The other 1:24 hit is the Sophomore Sensations insert, shown off here by Patrick Kane. Of all the players featured in this set, I imagine he and Price are the ones to have, so I can’t complain. As you may be able to see on the right side there, he was the Rookie of the Year last year and a big part of the Blackhawk resurgence this year. The card itself is probably one of the nicer of the inserts, but still kind of bland.

Pack 20

24 Jussi Jokinen
53 Daniel Carcillo
71 Marc Staal

32 Brad Boyes
106 Benoit Pouliot
152 Milan Hejduk
111 Patrick Sullivan
140 Rick Nash

Staal is part of the Sophomore v Rookie game during All Star weekend later this month as the NHL continues to tinker with things to draw more attention.  I’m not sure that’s the solution, but congrats to Staal and to Dubi in making the sophomore team.

A nice set of packs, a couple Rangers, an okay insert, and mostly cards needed for the set.  I’m all about that.  And the next set should have that final jersey card.  Let’s hope for something good.

The box so far:

Base: 147 out of 200 (73.5%)
Young Guns (1:6): 7 out of 50 (14%) – Bogosian, Sbisa, Fistric, Doughty, Wheeler, D’Agostini, Sestito
Game Used: 1 – Chris Chelios
Captains Calling (1:24): 1 – Brendan Morrow
Hat Trick Heroes (1:12): 2 – Joe Sakic, Dany Heatley

Winter Classic Highlights: 2 – Campbell, Armstrong

I think you should get a UD Exclusives parallel in the box too – they seem to be identical to the regular version on the back so be careful to look on the front. I got Marek Svatos.
