Reds Spring training news

4 03 2009

It’s still early, and they’ve only had two starts a piece, but the best news to come out of Reds spring training so far is the emergence of a battle for 5th starter spot.  Both formerly lost but possibly found Homer Bailey and part of the bounty in the Adam Dunn trade Micah Owings have been pitching very well so far this spring, and Homer’s even got a better attitude to boot.

Take a look at these lines:

Owings:  6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6K’s
Bailey: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6K’s

Like I said, it’s still early, and it takes bats longer to warm up than pitchers. But if Owings and Bailey are anywhere near this good when it starts to count, the Reds could lose a lot of games 3-2 and 2-1 instead of 10-3 and 12-1. It’s an exciting prospect, to be sure.

I’d love to see Homer win the spot, but I have a feeling if it’s close that Owings will get the nod due to his bat. Lord knows the Reds will need all the offense they can get.

But if Jonny Gomes can keep hitting…

Oh how sad, yet so true. This looks like the first year in a long time where the rotation isn’t the big question mark… It’s sad when you have to take into account Owings bat as a reason for him to make the squad as a pitcher… Of course, I’m actually rooting for Owings as I think he can be quite good – but if Bailey pitches well I’ll root for him too!

And then they could each pitch 300 innings, blow out their arms, and be useless in a couple of years.
