Tournament of Gimmicks, Round 3 – The Berger Regional’s sweet sixteen match ups

29 03 2010

I think this is what we all kind of expected to happen, as the top four seeds have powerhoused their way through most of the tournament and the match ups we’ve all been hoping for are about to take place.

Game 1

1) 2008/09 Upper Deck Yankee Stadium Legacy vs 4) 2007-08 Topps Moments and Milestones

If I have to stare at those Yankee Stadium Legacy cards all day, I may as well make it a good one. But don’t take that as an endorsement. For anyone but Yankees’ fans, these were a waste of a card.

And since the YSL gets an upgrade, so too does Moments and Milestones. Those cards weren’t ugly, but 181 Chipper Jones cards all with multiple parallels is enough to make even the hardcore collector’s head a-splode.

Game 2

2) 2010 Topps Milton Bradley “Scoreboard Abe” vs 3) 2001 Donruss Elite Extra Edition $5.99 Redemption Cards

I’m really torn on this one.  No one will ever make me understand the connection between Milton Bradley, the Cubs, Abraham Lincoln, and baseball.  It may as well have been a land of candy photoshopped into the outfield or perhaps some battleships.  No, wait, that would actually make some sort of limited sense.

But those mail in $5.99 mail-in redemptions.  Ugh.  And now you can find them on eBay cheaper than the redemption price, which makes the whole idea even worse in my mind.  And since there’s 50 of them, for every Victor Martinez, there are eleven guys like Erick Almonte, Jeff Deardoff, David Williams, and David Brous.  Who?  Exactly.

There you have it.  Two great match ups, three days to vote.  Voting ends on April 1st at 12:01 EST, so…

And don’t forget the Beckett, Burdick, and Olbermann regions need your votes, too.
