2010 Topps Finest Redemption #3 announced

14 05 2010

Yes, I know it’s a little late, but this is the first chance I’ve had to talk about the latest Finest redemption.  It’s Starlin Castro!

I understand the kid’s made quite a splash and Topps is trying to cash in on the buzz.  Same for Ike Davis of the Mets and Jason Heyward of the Braves.  I get that.  And look out when Strasburg finally makes his debut in the Nationals uniform.  I expect Topps to announce that one minutes after he first toes the rubber.

But seriously, how much better does Mike Leake have to pitch before he gets his spot in the program? Leake so far has a 3.10 ERA with 28 strikeouts, a 1.20 WHIP, and a 3-0 record, and he’s done all this without spending a day in the minors.  Does he need to throw a no-no, or el perfecto before someone issues a Finest redemption card for the guy?  If he had been a Yankee, would we still be waiting on this one?  Of course not.  So step it up, Topps and get it done.

By the way, Topps announced that 10% of the cards will feature Castro getting a pie in the face from Abraham Lincoln.  Good luck!

Not sure why Mike Leake hasn’t gotten a card yet. Maybe the Reds need to send him back down, then call him back up and have him pitch well in his first game back for people to notice.

Or maybe they’re just waiting on Aroldis the same way they’re waiting on Strasburg. And if that’s the case, I can’t see them having two rookies on the same team both getting redemption cards in the same series. Which means Leake is screwed.

Maybe he’ll get a redemption in Topps Series 2 if they’re still going to do that.
